Becoming a tour guide

According to the Municipal Law, it is mandatory for tour guides in Quebec City to obtain a Tour Guide Permit. The permit is delivered upon the completion of a college degree issued by an accredited institution. A French and bilingual courses are given at Mérici College, and an English course at Champlain St. Lawrence College. For experienced tour guides who live outside Quebec City, the training is also available online, in English only, through Champlain St. Lawrence College. Furthermore, tour guides in Quebec City must have their police background check renewed every 3 years.

The Tour Guide Course is usually given two evenings a week and Saturday mornings over two semesters, Autumn and Winter. This training focuses on the historic district of Old Quebec, but includes an overview of the metropolitan area of Quebec. It also explores the City of Lévis as well as other tourist sites in the region such as Orléans Island, Beaupré Coast, the Sanctuary Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Montmorency Falls, etc.
